Mihajlo Mihajlov Mihajlo Mihajlov (Mihail Nikolaevich Mihajlov), scholar and author, was born in 1934 in Pancevo, Yugoslavia -- the son of Russian emigres. He completed his education at Zagreb University. Prior to his first arrest for his book, Moscow Summer in 1965, he taught Modern Russian Literature at the University of Zagreb (Zadar branch) as Assistant Professor. Between 1965 and 1978, Mihajlov spent a total of seven years in prison for essays and articles that were published in the Yugoslav and Western press. Since 1978, Mihajlov has resided in the United States. Between 1978 and 1985, as a Visiting Professor, he taught courses in Russian literature and philosophy at Yale University, the University of Virginia (Charlottesville), Ohio State University, Siegen University (FRG), Glasgow University (UK), and spent a year as a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (North Carolina). He also lectured at several dozen universities in the United States and Western Europe. From 1985 to 1994, Mihajlov worked for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty as an Analyst and Commentator for Intellectual and Ideological Affairs, in Munich and Washington, D.C. Since 1994 Mihajlov has been a Senior Associate with the Program on Transitions to Democracy, Elliot School of International Affairs, The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Since 1999 he was also an Adjunct fellow of the Hudson Institute. In 2000 Mihajlov was a Visiting Professor at State University - Higher School of Economics in Moscow (Russia). Mihajlov is the author of hundreds of articles and essays published in journals, newspapers, and scholarly collections. His major works, some of which have been translated into many European and Asiatic languages, are Moscow Summer (1965), Russian Themes (1968), Underground Notes (1976 and 1982), Unscientific Thoughts (1979 and 2004), The Homeland is Freedom (1994) and Planetary consciousness (1982 and 2001). In 1978, he received an annual award from the International League for Human Rights, and in 1980, he was the recipient of the Ford Foundation Award for Humanistic Perspectives on Contemporary Society. He is a member of the editorial board of several journals, and a member of the International PEN Club, as well as an honorary member of many writers and human rights national and international organizations. He is also the Chairman of the Democracy International Committee to Aid Democratic Dissidents in (former) Yugoslavia (CADDY).
