Biblioteka Alexandria in Foreign Policy

In its April e-newsletter called "The FP Alert", Foreign Policy, one of the most prominent US journals, included a link to Biblioteka Alexandria Online coverage of Milosevic's Trial. FP says: "The Belgrade-based book review magazine Alexandria was created in 1998 as a cultural bulwark against nationalism and authoritarianism. Its Web site offers several articles in English, including analyses of the trial and Milosevic's performance, commentary, and reviews of related Web sites."

A traditional Small Publishers Book Fair is to be held in the Belgrade Dom Omladine, December 17 – 21, 2001. Alexandria Press and Feministicka 94 will have their own stand at the first floor. All of our books, as well as the new issue of Biblioteka Alexandria will be for sale.

Dusan Velickovic, editor in chief of Biblioteka Alexandria, attended the conference "Genocidal violence in the former Yugoslavia, 1992-1995", which was held at The Danish Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Copenhagen, November 15 – 18, 2001. Velickovic delevered a paper entitled "Mortal Men, Immortal Crimes". He concluded: "Milosevic had intended, for his people, the sort of immortality that Aristotle sees in belonging to a species whose immortal life is guaranteed through procreation. Which, paradoxically, left only Milosevic and his political gangsters as mortals. Only they had their own recognisable life-story, their power, their money, and their crimes. All the rest of us were supposed to be immortal and exist only as members of the ethnos, the people..."

Our Web designer, Uros, and his girlfriend Ivana, got a boy at 12.35 pm, November 4, 2001. Mother is fine, as well as the boy who is 3,550 gr., 50 cm. Uros was present at the delivery and he cut the umbilical cord personally.
Congratulations Uros and Ivana, it's the very good beginning of 21st century and post totalitarian era.

On September 15th, 2001, Montenegrin dally Pobjeda published an interview with Dusan Velickovic, editor in chief of Biblioteka Alexandria. Velickovic talked about Biblioteka Alexandria as an international project, as well as about politics and culture in Serbia and Montenegro. He said Montenegro and Serbia should be independent in European way, without borders and customs. Being so closed, very alike and very different, both countries might consider it to be a great privilege and advantage.

Biblioteka Alexandria's contributing editor, Richard Byrne, arrived in Belgrade on September 20, 2001 for a ten day visit. He talked with Alexandria's editors about establishing Biblioteka Alexandria USA in Washington to work on further developing Alexandria's international horizons. Richard Byrne brought his novel in manuscript, Luckyboys, fragments of which will be published in Biblioteka Alexandria's online and print issues soon. During his stay in Belgrade, Byrne visited the Independent Association of Serbian Journalists, Belgrade Media Center and weekly Vreme. No, it's not all. We brought Richard to Coldcut concert, as well as to Belgrade clubs Molloko, Pazi Skola and Akademija. On Sunday, September 30, 2001, Richard was the special guest at small party on the occasion of Alexandria Press two year anniversary. Richard Byrne returned to Washington on Monday, October 1.

Biblioteka Alexandria's author and contributor, Jasmina Tesanovic took part at the International Festival of Literature and Freedom of Speech in Stavanger, Norway, 26-30 September, 2001. This year Festival was titled "Balkan 2001. The Responsibility of the Writer, the Role of Literature". Jasmina Tesanovic delivered a keynote speech on "The West and the Rest. The Balkans as War Museum or European Cultural Laboratory".
